The Waban Magic Flutes Perform at the Waban Library Center

The Waban Library Center (WLC) welcomes the Waban Magic Flutes for a concert on Saturday, February 27th at 11am. The Waban Magic Flutes are a flute ensemble of six youngsters who live in and around Waban. They all attended the Angier School and study flute with longtime Waban resident Deborah Charness.

The Magic Flutes have performed at the WCRB Cartoon Festival in Symphony Hall Boston, Cabot Park Village in Newton, Russells Garden Center in Wayland, and the Angier School Multi Cultural Festival.

The program will conclude with with a duo featuring flutist Deborah Charness and classical guitarist Mark Leighton. Deborah Charness studied flute in Paris with Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alain Marion. She has performed at, among others, the Aspen Musical Festival and was co-founder of the Forum Internationale de Musique at Le Touquet, France. Her solo recitals have taken her throughout Europe and the U. S. Ms. Charness has soloed with the Boston Pops and was founder of the St. Germain Trio, whose debut performance in Washington at the Organization of American States was enthusiastically reviewed. She has collaborated with the guitarist Robert Paul Sullivan in annual Jordan Hall performances and appeared as the medieval flutist in Eric Rohmer's film Perceval.

Professor Mark Leighton is a classical and jazz guitarist who has performed as a solo recitalist and ensemble player at venues including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum and the Post Office Square Concert Series in Boston, among others. An Adjunct Music Professor at Eastern Nazarene College since 1989, he has served on the Applied Music Faculty at Colby College since 1981. Mr. Leighton has been Artistic Director of First Night Quincy for the past 15 years.

The event is open to the public free of charge. No registration is required. The Waban Library Center is located at 1608 Beacon Street in Newton.
