Seeking Volunteers at the Waban Library Center

The Waban Library Center (WLC) is reopening this September!  In addition to continuing as a community library, the WLC has expanded offerings (including classes) and hours to appeal to a greater number of residents.  We are located at 1601 Beacon Street in Waban Square (conveniently situated near the Waban T stop on the Green Line).  We are currently seeking energetic volunteers with a passion for libraries, learning and community enrichment, to join us in this exciting endeavor!  We offer the opportunity to work in a friendly, stimulating environment, with a great group of volunteers and instructors.  We provide a range of hours (including weekdays, weeknights, and weekends) and ask that volunteers commit a minimum of two consecutive hours per week.  Responsibilities vary, are somewhat flexible, and are evolving.  Examples include:

  • Serving as an ambassador of the WLC – includes welcoming visitors; providing guidance and assistance; soliciting feedback and ideas; creating a friendly, stimulating, organized environment.
  • Providing basic librarian services including assisting patrons in locating books, checking out materials, processing returns, shelving books, creating educational and/or seasonal displays.
  • Providing administrative support such as answering telephone and e-mails, opening mail, filing, keeping bulletin boards and reading areas neat and organized, facilitating course registration, etc.
  • Providing instructor support.  Opening and closing the facility. Assisting with limited set-up and clean-up.
  • Sharing your energy and ideas about ways to improve the WLC.

If interested, please contact the Waban Library Center at wabanlibrary@gmail.com or Alice Jacobs at 617.244.1362.  We will provide an orientation and training session for all of our volunteers.
